Do we have Termites in Tasmania?
YES
Are they destructive to buildings?
NO
Confused yet? Lets get to the bottom of this!
There are approximately 360 species of Termite in Australia. Only a small number of these actually cause any harm to our lifestyle. Whether that be in the way of damage to buildings or eating valuable crops. In fact, most termites are actually quite helpful within the eco system and break down dead decaying wood in the wilderness. They are also a food source for many native animals.
But, rest assured, there are no Termites in Tasmania that will cause any significant damage to well maintained buildings. At the moment.

Like other pests, termites are categorised according to their nesting and feeding habits. Lets explain the likely Tasmanian type of termite first!

Damp Wood Termites

Usually infest timber that is outside such as tree stumps or logs that are already damp decayed and rotting. If found within buildings it is an indication that there is a moisture issue such as a leaking pipe. They are easily controlled by repairing the source of the moisture.

Dry Wood Termites

Usually infest dry wood such as furniture. They do require high humidity to survive though so it unlikely that they would survive in the Tasmanian climate for an extended period.

Subterranean Termites

These are the main source of issue for Mainland Australia. They are the most common Termite to invade buildings and are one of the most destructive Pests worldwide. Why don't we have these Termites in Tasmania? This is purely environment based. It is not currently wet or humid enough for them to survive here in Tasmania.
